Questions for you, part five

Other questions posts: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4

1. If you went to college, what did you major in? Do you (or did you) work in that field?

2. Is there something else you wish you’d majored in instead?

3. What’s your favorite kind of chocolate?

My answers:

1. I decided early in high school I wanted to be an accountant - lots of numbers, but not complicated calculations, office job - and never changed my mind. I majored in accounting and that's what I do today. I still think it's what I'm most suited to.

2. I worked in a pharmacy all through high school and college and would have liked to become a pharmacist. I hated science, though. Hated. There was no way I would have made it through pharmacy school. I took a couple science classes my sophomore year, just so I wouldn't have any regrets. I don't. I don't have a sciency brain. Math only.

3. Dark, dark chocolate.

  1. 1. I majored in biological science, which was the Poultry Science Department/Ag School equivalent of a normal biology degree. I work in biology (toxicology, specifically), but not with chickens anymore. I miss chickens a lot, but recently turned up allergic to egg whites, so my plan to get backyard chickens just went down the tubes.

    2. I sometimes wonder if I'd have preferred getting a professional degree (Pharmacy is the most obvious as it is the flipside of tox), so that I could work a 9-5 job and leave work at work. And also live anywhere I wanted (everywhere needs pharmacists, but not everywhere needs research toxicologists).

    3. Milk. I need the sugar component - dark chocolate tastes like bitter dirt to me.

    1. I'm a fan of sugar (obviously), but it's the "milk" in milk chocolate that gets to me. It's disgustingly creamy. I don't like that.

  2. 1. I actually went to college 3 times (once for undergrad, twice for grad school). I major in business in undergrad and I also have an MBA and a MAcc. I'm a financial analyst so while it isn't exactly accounting, it involves accounting. I have used my business degree throughout my career so yes, I work in that field.

    2. There are lots of thing I would have rather majored in. I thought about pharmacy recently since my dad is a pharmacist and those jobs are always in high demand. I really wanted to major in arts administration and considered a 2nd degree in that field but I got married (the 1st time) instead. Whoops!

    3. Milk chocolate with nuts

    1. I have my MAcc, too. I should have gotten an MBA concurrently, since nearly all the classes I took for my MAcc were actually a part of the MBA program.

Financial analysis sounds interesting. I suppose it's pretty close to what I do, since I audit (and analyze) entity's financial statements.

  3. 1. My undergraduate is in Food Science (basically Chemistry, Microbiology and Engineering as it relates to food), and my MSc. is in Food Policy. I loved studying science, but had NO DESIRE to work as a scientist. Seriously. I joke that I'm far more Tech than Sci -- I have no burning desire to find new stuff or break new ground, but I am SO AWESOME at making links between things and improving existing processes. I now work in HR, but my HR jobs involve coordinating recruitment/development programs or supporting massive HR transformation exercises. The skill set I honed through scientific study is a useful one.

    2. Hmm...I LOVED what I studied. Adored it. I cannot imagine having studied anything else, despite what I do know. If I had to guess, I suspect that one day, I'll head back to a science-based organization and do HR. Best of both worlds.

    3. Belgian chocolate truffles. The perfect amount of cocoa. I can't wait to get back to Belgium -- there's a Neuhaus chocolaterie on every corner and Belgium waffles sold on the street all day long. And the beer. Mmm...

    1. I *loved* Belgium. Didn't have a waffle while I was there, though (I don't really like waffles. And had to save room for ALL THE CHOCOLATE.)

  4. 1. Majored in accounting. I do work in the field, yes.

    2. Not really. Can't think of anything else that interests me more, not that accounting is all that interesting but it's something I'm good at, at least.

    3. Dark chocolate. Just solid squares of perfectly dark chocolate. Mmmm.

  5. 1. Chemical engineering. Yes, I worked for an oilfield service company for 3 1/2 years before I started this whole "stay at home" thing.

    2. While in college I considered Chemistry or Petroleum Engineering. Both were (at my school) very similar (if slightly easier) degrees than Chem Eng. I stuck it out with Chemical Engineering for the widest variety of job opportunities. Definitely don't regret it, I love my degree.

    3. Dark. YUM.

    1. I don't think I would have lasted 5 minutes in a Chemical Engineering degree.

  6. 1. English Literature since it required zero math and I already knew I wanted to be a librarian.

    2. I think the literature degree made the most sense and I loved reading and analyzing works. I had minors in Spanish and German and sometimes wish I'd turned one of them into a second major.

    3. I like dark chocolate but not the super high percentage stuff. Is too bitter for me. I am a pansy.

  7. 1. Mechanical engineering. I considered switching to civil engineering but my professor convinced me that the two were fairly similar, so I stayed with ME because I was already on that path & wouldn't have to backtrack. I did try to get exposure to lot of different engineering areas with electives to broaden my options. I was a packaging engineer for a food company, then an industrial/quality engineer for a tech company, and now I'm doing the home with my kids kind of engineering (which is more juggling really, ha!).

    2. Oh, I don't know. I always had designs on studying communications or radio/TV/film, but I think the idea of the ruthlessness of those industries scared me off. I'm good with my choice.

    3. I have to pick? ALL CHOCOLATE.

  8. 1. I majored in Psychology. I worked in the field for 8 1/2 years where I worked myself into a management position. While I was really good at management, I missed working with the kids (it was a residential facility for developmentally disabled children) and was uber stressed out ALL OF THE TIME! I also wanted to work on having kids and being on call/working constantly did not permit that life change. I quit and began to work in online copywriting/SEO. I was okay at it, but simply bored. I ended up getting laid off following the oil spill (I was working for a web design company near Gulf Shores). Now I manage the house (poorly) and make jewelry. While we still don't have kids, I'm much happier.

    2. I kinda wish I had done something more creative: creative writing, fine art, drama (which is kinda scary for my shy self), or even English. Of course, I am always toying with the idea of going back to school for a Masters. I keep thinking that Art Therapy might be a nice middle line between what I want/need.

    3. Dark chocolate. . .or Reese's Sticks (mmm! crunchy, chocolatey, peanut buttery!)

  9. I majored in English (concentration in Professional Writing) and Communications (concentration in Journalism). I was an editor and technical writer before I left work when Lorelai was born, so I definitely used the English degree. I only majored in Journalism because there were so many Comm minors that they weren't taking any more, so I had to double major or pick a different minor; by the time I decided what to do, it was spring of junior year and I had to concentrate on whatever had classes that would work for my schedule. If I could do it over again I'd have decided earlier so I could have concentrated in PR.

I would have LOVED to be a forensic scientist, like a crime scene investigator or something, but I do NOT have the head for the math and science. Really, English and Comm were about all I had the capacity to major in. (I was a theatre major for a year and a half before I realized that I wasn't ENJOYING theatre anymore, because the theatre departments at both colleges I attended SUCKED THE LIFE out of it.)

I generally prefer fruity candy to chocolate, but if I'm going to do chocolate I prefer milk. Especially mixed with caramel, marshmallow, or coconut. Mmmmm.

  10. 1. My undergrad is in Social Science. My graduate work is in International Relations, and currently in Library and Information Studies. I've never worked in any of those fields.

    2. Education. It was one of my first majors, but I wish I'd stuck with it. It's what I want to do my PhD in, so sticking with it from the beginning would have put me farther along in what I've always kind of known I wanted to do.

    3. Dark. Preferably with some sort of salt or caramel (or both).
